Women’s Soccer: Marzinke’s Hat Trick Leads Cairn past Trinity (DC)

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team won, 5-3, at home against non-conference opponent Trinity University (DC) inside the Stillman Complex on Monday afternoon.

Cairn (7-4-1) and Trinity (3-3) engaged in a tight, defensive affair early, with neither team scoring through 30 minutes of play. The Highlanders broke through in the 33rd minute when junior Becca Marzinke (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian) scored off a rebound attempt from classmate Em Kuansongtham's (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School of Bangkok) free kick to give Cairn a 1-0 lead. Marzinke added her second tally less than a minute later after firing a shot past the keeper to extend the advantage to 2-0. The Highlanders increased the lead to 4-0 after sophomore Julia Bruestle (Abington, PA / Abington HS) and Marzinke each scored in the 40th minute, capping off the hat trick for Marzinke. Cairn took that 4-0 lead into intermission.

The Highlanders bolstered their advantage to 5-0 after Kuansongtham scored off of a through ball from senior Rachel Yoder (Telford, PA / Souderton) in the 61st minute. Cairn held that 5-0 lead until the later portion of the contest, however, Trinity scored three unanswered goals to get back into the game. The Highlanders regrouped from there, and held on for the 5-3 victory.

Marzinke led the offensive effort with her first-career hat trick, while Kuansongtham added a goal and an assist. Sophomore net minder Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) collected three saves en-route to a complete game victory.

The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Saturday, October 8 when they return to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action at home against Notre Dame of Maryland University at 2 p.m.
