ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team was on the road Saturday evening as they shutout the Ravens of Rosemont College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action by a score of 1-0.
"Weather, elements, and a conference opponent tested us tonight." remarked Head Coach
Kailey Bartholomew.
"This was a hard-fought, electric battle on the road. To come in and get our first conference win on the road in these conditions was impressive. The coaching staff is very proud of our team and their efforts. Our defense and goalkeeper saved some close chances and we peppered their keeper in the second half to finally get a goal in the final minutes of the match. This sets the tone for the rest of our season, proving we can win in spite of some key injuries."
Cairn (6-4-1, 2-1 CSAC) was on the road for the first time in conference play this season when it took on Rosemont (2-3-2, 1-1 CSAC). It was a clean sheet for both sides in the first half, with neither reaching the goal as they traded shots. The second half played much like the first, remaining all tied up until the closing minutes. With the waning minutes of the contest looming, the Highlanders got a golden opportunity in the 87
th minute on a corner kick opportunity. Junior
Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy) took the corner and bounced it right into the breadbasket of senior
Emily Minard (Columbus, NJ / Life Center Academy), who scored her second goal of the season to put the Highlanders ahead, 1-0. Rosemont couldn't craft a response as the match came to a close four minutes later as Cairn held onto the lead to notch its second conference triumph of the season.
Rosemont led the way in shots (16-14), though none were successful. Each squad had seven shots on goal. Lee assisted Minard in the only goal of the match and had a game-high six shots for the Highlanders. Sophomore goalkeeper
Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian HS) held off the Ravens with seven saves in a complete game effort.
The Highlanders return home in the Stillman Athletic Complex to take on Trinity University (D.C.) on Monday at 3 p.m. before returning to conference play.
