LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team won, 4-1, at home under the lights at the Stillman Complex against non-conference adversary Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday evening.
Before the contest, the Highlanders honored their 10 graduating seniors for their contributions to the program over their respective careers,
Kameron Clark (Ewing, NJ / Ewing HS),
Josh Goodyear (Camp Hill, PA / Camp Hill HS),
Tyler Skaer (Brookhaven, PA / Penn State Brandywine),
Micah Portis (Abington, PA / Abington HS),
Stephen Filimonczuk (Cranford, NJ / Cranford HS),
David Falcon (Wayne, NJ / Hawthorne Christian),
Jayson Fields (Vineland, NJ / Cumberland Christian),
Hunter Keaton (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt HS),
Garrett Seidel (Harleysville, PA / Upper Bucks Christian) and Assistant Coach
Hayden Phillips (Collegeville, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy).
"I'm proud of the effort today." remarked Head Coach
Luke Gibson.
"It was a good team win on a day where we got to honor an incredible group of men. These seniors have been pace setters for our program and we're grateful we have a few more chapters left to write with them."
Cairn (4-5-2) opened up the scoring just over two minutes into the contest when sophomore
Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) and Fields connected and found classmate
Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township), who fired a left-footed rocket from just over 35 yards out past the Gwynedd Mercy (1-10-1) keeper to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Cairn added to its lead in the 11th minute, when Fields got in on the scoring after a foul inside the box granted the sophomore a PK opportunity. Field's deposited the PK and gave Cairn a 2-0 advantage. The Highlanders continued to pour on the offense just three minutes later, as a tick-tack toe chance off a corner kick led to a header goal by Skaer to increase the advantage to 3-0. Cairn added one more first-half tally in the 31st minute, when Portis fired a shot on the cage that redirected off the keeper and right to an awaiting Goodyear for his third goal of the season. The Griffins added a penalty kick goal in the second half, but that was all the Gwynedd offense could muster as Cairn left Senior Night with a comfortable 4-1 victory.
Cairn out shot Gwynedd in the contest (24-6) and bested the Griffins in shots on goal (11-3). Cairn generated all the corner kick opportunities in the contest (8-0). Fields and Goodyear led the offensive effort with a goal and an assist a-piece, while Clark corralled two saves en-route to a complete game shutout.
The Highlanders will now have a short break until they are back on the pitch on Saturday, October 8 when they open up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on the road in La Plume against Keystone College in a rematch of last year's CSAC Semifinal contest at 4 p.m.
