BRISTOL, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team lost in its season-opener by a score of 2-1 at home against non-conference foe Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday evening.
Cairn (0-1) struck immediately less than two minutes into the contest when the Highlanders were granted a penalty kick after a Charger foul inside the box. Senior
Sarah Jackson (Milltown, NJ / Middlesex County College) made the most of the opportunity, burying the PK past the keeper's outstretched left hand to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Cairn held that lead for just over 11 minutes before Lancaster Bible (1-1) knotted the game up a 1-1 in the 14
th minute. The game remained tied at 1-1 heading into intermission. The Chargers claimed the lead in the 65
th minute as Jade Weir delivered a header off of a corner kick past Cairn goalkeeper
Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian HS) to make it 2-1. The Highlanders got one more chance in the 89
th minute when senior
Victoria Ruitto (Ellington, CT / The Cornerstone Christian School) put a shot on net, but LBC goalkeeper Hannah Leib made the stop and sealed the victory for the Chargers.
LBC held the edge in shots (16-9) and corner kicks (7-3). Cairn sophomore
Becca Marzinke (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian) fired a team-high three shots and Lazor made a game-high five saves in her first collegiate contest.
The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Thursday, September 9 when the travel to Penn State Abington for their first road contest of the season at 4 p.m.
