Men’s Soccer: Highlanders Suffer First Loss of Season in Double Overtime at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the 2021 season at Arcadia by a score of 2-1 in double overtime on Tuesday evening.

Cairn (2-1) started the contest the same way it started its first two games, by scoring the first goal as sophomore Youngan Kim (Kandern, Germany / Black Forest Academy) found the back of the net for his first career goal to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Arcadia (1-2) outshot the Highlanders 5-4 in the first half, but Cairn maintained its 1-0 lead heading into intermission. The Knights broke through in the 58th minute when Matt Berndlmaier soared a free kick past the outstretched arms of Cairn senior goalkeeper Kameron Clark (Ewing, NJ / Ewing) to knot the score up at 1-1. The Highlanders got a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead late in the contest when freshman Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) darted past the Arcadia back line and found classmate Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township) for a good look in the slot, but Knight goalkeeper Jake Varrato got a hand on the shot and sent the game to extra time. In the first overtime, despite being man down, Brittain made an impact again with another good opportunity late in the period, but Varrato made another clutch save to push the game to double overtime. Arcadia deposited the game-winner in the 103rd minute, as Troy Toohey snuck past the Highlander back line and buried the golden goal.

The Knights held the advantage in shots (15-8) and corner kicks (7-1) and narrowly held the edge in shots on goal (9-8). Clark made seven saves in the complete game effort while Beers fired a team-high three shots (all on goal)

The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Saturday, September 11 when they travel to Immaculata University for a non-conference contest at 1 p.m.
