Women’s Soccer: Highlanders’ Late Comeback Forces Double Overtime Draw with Lions

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team battled to a 3-3, double overtime draw on the road against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday evening.

Cairn (4-4-1, 1-0-1 CSAC) fell behind Bryn Athyn (2-2-2, 1-0-1 CSAC) in the first half when the Lions scored the first goal of the contest in the 33rd minute. The Lion took a 1-0 lead into intermission. In the second half, Cairn knotted the game up at one a-piece when freshman Katy Lanchak (Jarrettsville, MD / Harford Christian) collected a loose ball inside the box and dished it to senior Lauren Costa (Egg Harbor City, NJ / The Pilgrim Academy), who scored her fifth goal of the season to tie the game. Bryn Athyn responded, scoring back-to-back goals in the 70th and 71st minute to take a commanding 3-1 lead with less than 20 minutes to play in regulation. The ever-resilient Highlanders answered the call, as sophomore Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy) made the most of penalty kick attempt, scoring her first goal of the season to cut the deficit to one in the 81st minute. Just six minutes later, junior Rachel Yoder (Telford, PA / Souderton) fired a missile from just under 30 yards out, squeaking the shot past the Bryn Athyn keeper after senior Ellen Beck (Charlestown, NH / Fall Mountain) left it for Yoder to tie the game. Cairn put an extensive amount of pressure on the Lions' back line in the overtime frames, outshooting them 6-1 in the extra time, but could not convert the golden goal, ending the contest in a draw.

Bryn Athyn narrowly outshot the Highlanders 17-15 and edged Cairn in corner kicks (10-2). Cairn Freshman goalkeeper Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) corralled a career-high nine saves in a complete game effort.

The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Saturday, October 2 when they continue Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play as they travel to the University of Valley Forge. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
