Women’s Soccer: O’Connell Surpasses Career Wins Record in Home Victory vs. Rosemont

BRISTOL, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team won 5-1 in their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener against Rosemont College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, fifth-year Head Coach Kristina O'Connell became the All-Time Winningest Coach in program history with her 34th career win, surpassing the old career wins record of 33 (the women's soccer team became an official program in 1999).

Cairn (4-4, 1-0 CSAC) got off to a hot start with senior forward Lauren Costa (Egg Harbor City, NJ / The Pilgrim Academy) scoring the first two of the Highlander's five goals, both within the first 30 minutes of play. The first came in the 13th minute and the second, not long after, in the 30th minute. Junior midfielder Becca Marzinke (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian) put the Highlanders up 3-0 in the 34th minute and freshman forward Julia Wright (Harrisonville, PA / Shalom Christian Academy) joined in on the scoring spree 13 seconds later, after assisting Costa's second goal earlier in the match. The Highlanders shutout Rosemont (1-5, 0-1 CSAC) through the first half. The Ravens would not be kept quiet as Maciana Mazzeo tallied Rosemont's only goal in the 62nd minute. Senior forward Sarah Jackson (Milltown, NJ / Middlesex College) added one more goal for good measure, scoring off a penalty kick in the 78th minute.

Sophomore defender Grace Miller (Chapel Hill, NC / Central Bucks West) led the Highlanders with two assists on the day, a career-high for Miller. Sophomore midfielder Em Kuansongtham (Bankok, Thailand / International Community School of Bangkok), senior midfielder Dakota Hitchner (Ocean View, NJ / King University), Wright and, Jackson each tallied an assist. Freshman keeper Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) had two saves on the day. The Highlanders led all offensive categories including shots (14-4), shots on goal (11-3) and corners (3-2) in their commanding victory.

The Highlanders return to action in conference play at Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday, September 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
