Women’s Soccer: Late Run Pushes Griffins Past Highlanders

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team saw its three-game win streak come to an end following a 3-2 defeat at non-conference foe Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday evening.

Cairn (3-4) struck first when senior Lauren Costa (Egg Harbor City, NJ / The Pilgrim Academy) found the back of the net off of a free kick to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Gwynedd Mercy (3-3) tied the game with a goal in the 24th minute and gained the lead with another tally in the 39th minute. Cairn knotted the game back up at two a-piece when freshman Julia Wright (Harrisonville, PA / Shalom Christian Academy) scampered past the Griffin defense and found sophomore Micaela Prate (Huntingdon Valley, PA / Calvary Christian Academy) who buried the goal. The score remained 2-2 into halftime. Both teams settled into a defensive battle for most of the second half until Gwynedd took the lead, firing a shot off the crossbar that narrowly squeaked by the line for a goal to make it 3-2, which ended as the final score.

Cairn outshot Gwynedd Mercy (17-13) while both teams matched in shots on goal (9-9). Cairn also held the edge in corner kicks (2-0). Freshman goalkeeper Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) earned six saves in the contest, one short of a career-high.

The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Saturday, September 25 when they open up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at home against Rosemont College at Bristol Township Park. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
