Women’s Soccer: Highlanders Shutout Nittany Lions for Third-Straight Win

BRISTOL, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team won by a score of 2-0 at home against Penn State Mont Alto on Monday, marking their third-straight win. With the win, fifth-year Head Coach Kristina O'Connell tied the program record for most career victories with her 33rd career win.

Cairn (3-3) and Penn State Mont Alto (2-1) engaged in a defensive battle early, forcing Cairn freshman goalkeeper Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) to make two saves in the 18th and 19th minute to keep the game tied. The Highlanders broke through in the 37th minute, when senior Sarah Jackson (Milltown, NJ / Middlesex County College) scored her fifth goal of the season on an effective tic-tac-toe play from sophomores Micaela Prate (Huntingdon Valley, PA / Calvary Christian Academy) and Becca Marzinke (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian) to put Cairn up 1-0. The Highlanders took that 1-0 lead into the break. Cairn collected an important insurance goal just less than four minutes into the second half, as senior Dakota Hitchner (Ocean View, NJ / Atlantic Christian) fired a shot off the keeper and freshman Julia Wright (Harrisonville, PA / Shalom Christian Academy) buried home the rebound to give Cairn a 2-0 lead, a lead it would hold for the rest of the contest.

Cairn outshot Penn State Mont Alto (23-5) and led in shots on goal (8-3). The Highlanders also bested the Nittany Lions in corner kicks (5-1). Lazor hauled in two saves between the pipes and collected the second shutout of her young career.

The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, September 22 when they hit the road for an away, non-conference contest at Gwynedd Mercy University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
