Highlanders Sweep Season Series with Mighty Macs

IMMACULATA, PA- In a match that looked eerily similar to the first time the teams met, the Highlanders took down Immaculata in four sets for the second time in as many weeks.

In the home opener, Cairn struggled in the first set before finding their rhythm and cruising to a four-set win. Tonight's matchup started similarly, with the Highlanders off to a slow start that dug them a 14-5 hole in the first set. Coach Nate Seidle called a timeout with his team down 15-23, and the Highlanders picked up a bit of momentum, using three Collin Benjamin kills and some offensive miscues by the Mighty Macs to pull within three. Unfortunately, a missed Highlander serve ended the set, 25-21 in the Mighty Mac's favor.

Sets two, three, and four found the Highlanders back in their comfort zone, relying on the offensive production of Collin Benjamin, Dave Cassel, and Caleb Horning, coupled with solid defense, to carry them to a 4-1 victory (set scores 25-20, 25-20, 25-15). Although Immaculata consistently battled back, racking up 55 team digs, the Highlanders were able to find different ways to put the ball down and put the game away. Collin Benjamin continued his excellent play and led the Highlanders with 11 kills; he also paced the Highlanders in aces (3) and blocks (4). Setter Scott Bassill dished out 30 assists, and a combination of good blocking and backrow defense, led by libero Josh Moyer with 17 digs, held the Mighty Macs to a -.016 hitting percentage in the match.

Cairn will take the next few days off before opening conference play against new CSAC foe, the University of Valley Forge. The Highlanders will travel to Phoenixville this Saturday to take on the Patriots, with first serve slated for 12 PM.
