Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball Cruises Past Patriots for First CSAC Victory

Cairn traveled to Phoenixville to take on the University of Valley Forge Patriots in an early CSAC matchup and left the Pit with a dominant 3-0 win.

The Highlanders traded points with the Patriots at the beginning of the first set, unable to pull more than two points ahead of their competition. Around the seven-point mark is where the Highlanders found their rhythm, using the attacking abilities of pin hitters Caleb Horning, Shea Scott, and Dave Cassel and middle blockers Collin Benjamin and Joe Poirier, as well as excellent serving, to go on an 18-4 run to end the set with a final score of 25-8.

The second set went similarly in the Highlanders' favor. Two kills from Caleb Horning, a block by Horning and Benjamin, and a Scott Bassill ace had the Highlanders up 5-0 to start the set, and the momentum stayed firmly with Cairn for the rest of the set. The Highlanders hit a blistering .625 with 11 kills and just 1 error as a team during the set, while holding the Patriots to just 3 kills on a -0.188 hitting percentage. The final set score of 25-5 was the Highlanders' most dominant set thus far in their young season.

The Patriots fought back early in the third set, and a string of scrappy plays from Valley Forge and a few Highlander miscues led to a mid-set score of 11-10 with the Patriots on top. A kill from freshman outside hitter Will Nase got the Highlanders back on track, and Cairn rattled off an impressive 15-1 run to end the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.

Cairn had excellent team production across the board, with nine Highlanders registering at least one kill, and four Highlanders contributing to an impressive 15 team aces. The team hit a very efficient .441 for the match with just seven hitting errors while holding the Patriots to just seven kills on a -.140 hitting percentage. Reserve Will Nase impressed in his first showing of the year, leading the Highlanders with 8 kills on a .462 hitting percentage. Senior setter Scott Bassill recorded 8 aces, which is tied for third all-time for an individual serving performance in a 3-set match in Cairn history.

The Highlanders look to extend their three-game win streak when they face the Knights of Neumann University in Langhorne on Wednesday, March 24th, with first serve slated for 7 PM.
