The Highlanders stuck to their winning ways this week, taking both games against the Word of Life Bible Institute Huskies 87-46 and 89-70. This is the first time since 2015 that Cairn men's basketball has started a season 4-0. Each of their four victories in the young season has also come with an impressive double-digit positive scoring margin of at least 19 points.
In Monday night's game, impressive team three-point shooting helped to build an insurmountable, wire-to-wire lead for the Highlanders.
Josh Forker (2-5),
Noah Mitchell (3-4),
Elias Ortiz (4-8),
Christian Rivera (1-1),
Andrew Aycoth (1-1), and
Matt Lucas (3-6) all contributed to an impressive 14 team three pointers on 52% shooting, compared to the Huskies 5-21 shooting from beyond the arc. The three-point differential, along with impressive foul shooting (15-17) and a blistering team defensive performance of 14 steals and 5 blocks all led to the Highlanders ending the night with a 39-point victory.
Dashaun Cain (15 points, 4 rebounds, 7-7 FT shooting) lead the Highlanders in scoring, followed by
Noah Mitchell (12 points, 2 assists, 2 steals) and
Elias Ortiz (12 points, 2 steals, 4-8 3PT).
Tuesday's tilt had a much different feel from the night before. The Highlander's shooting cooled considerably, only hitting 6 of 23 three-point attempts, and so Coach O'Connell's squad had to find another way to preserve their undefeated record. The answer came in yet another breakout game for junior center
Kameron Clark, whose 21 points and 19 boards made him the high man of the game for both teams. After only scoring a combined 8 points the night before, both
Tehron Phillips (19 points, 3 assists, 3 steals) and
Jesse Rivera (17 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds) had solid games as well. Overall, improved scoring in the paint and team rebounding from the night before led to a Highlander 89-70 victory, proving that the Highlander's young stars have the ability to win basketball games in a variety of ways.
Next, the Highlanders will put their undefeated season on the line when they face familiar rival Lancaster Bible College in back-to-back matchups on Friday, 2/19 and Saturday, 2/20. Cairn has not lost to LBC since the 2015 season, and most recently put together a decisive 114-81 victory over the Chargers in November of 2019.
