POTTERSVILLE, N.Y. – The Cairn University men's basketball team won, 85-59, on the road at non-conference opponent Word of Life Bible Institute in game two to split their weekend doubleheader with the Huskies on Saturday evening.
Cairn (2-1) responded well coming off the loss last night, storming out to a 20-5 lead just under eight minutes in the game. Word of Life (2-2) answered by cutting the deficit to 11 (29-18) with 5:44 remaining in the half, but the Highlanders knew they couldn't let the Huskies hang around, ending the period on a 19-5 run to take a commanding 48-24 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Highlanders settled into their half-court offense, as the Huskies were unable to get the Highlander advantage within 20 points, with their best chance cutting the lead to 71-51 with 8:21 remaining. Cairn closed the game with a 14-8 run to seal the victory and the doubleheader split with the Huskies.
Cairn out shot Word of Life in the contest, 50% (31-62) to 38.1% (24-63) and shot 46.7% (7-15) from long range. Cairn also converted 88.9% (16-18) of their opportunities from the charity stripe and were the beneficiaries of 31 points from their bench. The Highlanders forced 15 Husky turnovers and accumulated 17 points off those turnovers, while also besting Word of Life on the glass (33-24). Five Highlanders finished in double figures, led by junior Dashuan Cain (Wilmington, DE / Red Lion Christian Academy) with a game-high 15 points off five-of-seven shooting and was a perfect five-for-five from the free throw line. Cain also tied a game-high with senior
Kameron Clark (Ewing, NJ / Ewing) with six rebounds, while Clark also contributed 10 points. Cain also pocketed a game-high four steals. Junior
Josh Forker contributed 12 points and knocked down a game-high three triples, while senior
Jesse Rivera (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks East) added 10 points and a game-high six assists. Sophomore
Tehron Phillips (Philadelphia, PA / The Christian Academy) rounded out the Highlanders in double figures with 10 points.
Cairn will be back on the court on Monday, November 15 when it travels to Penn State Berks for a non-conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
