Men’s Basketball: Second-Half Rally Propels Highlanders Past Penn State Berks

READING, Pa. – The Cairn University men's basketball team won, 74-52, on the road at non-conference opponent Penn State Berks University on Monday evening. The Highlanders outscored the Nittany Lions 37-19 in the second half en route to victory.
 
Cairn (3-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Penn State Berks (0-2) just under three minutes into the contest. The Nittany Lions responded with a 14-4 run and led 14-11 with 12:52 left in the frame. Berks extended its lead to six, its largest lead of the game at the 5:31 mark (27-11) before the Highlanders closed the half on a 16-6 run to regain the lead and took a 37-33 advantage into the halftime break.
 
In the second half, the Highlanders made their presence felt with a 9-0 run, capped off a bucket and two free throws by junior Dashaun Cain (Wilmington, DE / Red Lion Christian Academy) to take a 46-33 lead just over three minutes into the half. The Nittany Lions got the deficit to eight (55-47) with 7:52 left in the bout, but Cairn responded with a 7-0 run to make the score 62-47 and put the Nittany Lions away.
 
Despite being out shot by Penn State Berks in the contest (31.7% to 25.4%), the Highlanders went to the free throw line a season-high 37 times in the contest, converting on 33 of those opportunities (89.2%). Cairn also dominated the glass, collecting 53 rebounds compared to 38 for the Nittany Lions, including 19 offensive rebounds and 17 second-chance points.
 
Cairn was led on the glass by senior Kameron Clark (Ewing, NJ / Ewing), who tied a career-high with 23 rebounds (third-most in a game in program history) to go along with a season-high 18 points and was 12-15 from the free throw line. Clark also hauled in nine offensive rebounds. Cain led the Highlanders on offense with a game- and career high 23 points and shot 91.7% from the charity stripe (11-12). Cain also corralled nine boards. Junior Noah Mitchell (Leesburg, VA / Taccoa Falls College) contributed eight points while senior Jesse Rivera (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks East) dished out a game-high four assists to go along with seven rebounds.
 
Cairn will be back on the court on Friday, November 19 when it travels to Scranton to take on Marywood University in the first round of the two-day Electric City Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
