Dralle Dominates, Highlanders Hand Shoremen Second Loss

CHESTERTOWN, MD- The Highlanders traveled to take on the Washington College Shoremen Monday afternoon. After a drama-filled first inning, the Highlanders outlasted Washington College, handing the Shoremen their second loss of the season 6-3.

Josh Melchior, in his first game in the leadoff spot, started the game with a single straight up the middle. Brett Marks and Melchior both advanced on a throwing error from the Shoremen shortstop, Brian Amantia singled to right center to load the bases, and Alejandro Fernandez stayed hot, singling home both Marks and Melchior. Nate Wilson singled to load the bases once more, Dan Bierc knocked home another run with a sacrifice fly, and Caleb Edman smashed a 2 RBI single to give the Highlanders a 5-0 lead. Edman manufactured the Highlanders 6th run on his own, swiping second base, taking third on a throwing error by the catcher, and scoring on another throwing error by the CF. With the big inning at its end, the Highlanders handed a 6-0 lead to starter Emilio Alvarez. Alvarez mowed through the Shoremen, allowing no runs through the first three, conceding 2 in the fourth and 1 in the fifth, but handing the ball off to Sam Dralle having done an excellent job against Washington's high-powered offense. Dralle shined, setting down the first 11 batters with ease. The Shoremen mustered back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 9th but the Highlanders big righty quickly induced an infield fly, and struck out the final batter, giving Cairn their first marquee win of the season.

Nate Wilson and Michael Sorowice went 2-4 at the dish, Alejandro Fernandez and Caleb Edman each finished with 2 RBIs, and Alvarez and Dralle teamed up to shut down Washington College and give the Highlanders their third straight win.

The Highlanders will host PSU-Abington Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 PM in search of their fourth straight victory.
