LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders hosted Eastern University Wednesday afternoon, welcoming in the first day of spring with a 9-5 win over the Eagles. Â
Â
The Highlanders handed the ball to senior
Albert Taylor for their home-opener, and the right hander did not disappoint, cruising through three innings before handing it off to
Eric Stinglen. The Highlanders got on the board with four runs in the fourth- freshman
Caleb Edman cracked a double to the fence in left center, and first basemen
Daniel Morales hit a towering sacrifice fly to bring in two more runs. Staked to the lead, Stinglen allowed only one hit through three innings to put the Highlanders in excellent position.
Alejandro Fernandez started another rally for the Highlanders in the 6
th with a leadoff single and steal of second base. Josh Melchior singled up the middle to advance Fernandez, and Edman singled once more for his third RBI of the afternoon. The Highlanders kept the pressure on Eastern's defense with their speed as Edman and
Michael Sorowice pulled off a double steal to perfection, and Nate Wilson bunted for a single to score Edman as well.
Brett Marks and
Emilio Alvarez singled to complete the Highlanders huge five run inning, and give Cairn a 9-2 lead. The Highlanders breezed through the next couple innings with little drama, until the ninth when Eastern catcher Luke Gruendl sent a ball deep to left field that seemed destined to clear the fence. Junior
Andrew Philips tracked back, leaping high into the air, over the fence, and robbing a certain homerun with what will almost assuredly be the catch of the year.
Â
The Highlanders cruised to a 9-5 win with Stinglen earning his first of the season. Fernandez, Edman, and Marks each notched 2 hits, Sorowice finished with 2 runs and 2 stolen bases, and Alvarez notched a hit and 2 walks.
Â
Cairn will travel to take on Lancaster Bible College Saturday afternoon, before hosting Stockton College at 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon.
