Men's Volleyball Narrowly Misses Against Randolph-Macon

LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders played two home games this weekend, dropping a match on Friday to Marymount University and falling in four sets to Randolph-Macon Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders took on one of the CVC's top-ranked teams in Marymount University Friday night. Cairn fought hard, but dropped the match in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-20). Juston Wolgemuth led the Highlanders on both sides against Marymount, notching 5 kills and hitting through the Saints' formidable block on various occasions. The Highlanders drew close in the third set when a five point serving run from Ben Norton brought the game within two points late in the set. However, Marymount closed out the set and the match a couple points later.

Ben Norton and Ryan Ludvik each tallied 6 digs, while Ludvik also chipped in with 14 assists and 2 solo blocks.

Against Randolph-Macon, the Highlanders found themselves in an intense battle from the start. The yellow jackets took an early 8-3 lead, but Cairn battled back once more behind the excellent serving of junior Ben Norton. The outside hitter notched four service aces to bring the Highlanders back into the contest. Cairn took the lead late into the set, sitting with a 24-22 lead and closing out the first set victory when Norton hammered home the game-winning kill. Randolph-Macon bounced back in the second set, riding an early run into a 25-13 victory to even the afternoon's affairs.

The Highlanders fought back in the third set, riding the stellar attack of sophomore Scott Bassill and freshman Dave Cassel to bring the score level at 23 apiece. Unfortunately, a service error and bad set from the Highlanders gave the Yellow Jackets the third set win, and a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set was an absolute battle with both teams trading extensive scoring runs in an attempt to gain control. The Highlanders led 23-20 until the Yellow Jackets notched four straight points to take the lead. Kills from Scott Bassill and Ben Norton sent the match to extra points, unfortunately, Randolph-Macon tallied the deciding two points to take the set 28-26, and the match 3-1.

Scott Bassill broke out for the Highlanders with 10 kills, while Sam Gabriels (17 digs) and Caleb Myers (10 digs) shined on the defensive end.

The Highlanders will host Messiah College Wednesday night at 7:00 PM, before traveling to take on CVC opponent Rutgers-Newark Thursday night.
