Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Highlanders March Past Beavers for Second Win

YARDLEY, PA- After buckets of rain fell for nearly an entire week, Cairn women's soccer was finally able to get back in action, hosting the Beavers of The City College of New York on Saturday night.

The Highlanders came to play from the tap, showing fresh legs and incredible poise for such a young squad, Cairn made their mark instantly. The ever-reliable Katie Ruitto and Sara Hayduchok each had great chances to score within the first five minutes, and Tori Ruitto nearly netted another free kick from distance just three minutes later. With 9 shots within the first 17 minutes, the Highlanders bombardment of the Beavers goal came to fruition in the 20th minute when freshman Lauren Costa received a slick pass from Dakota Hitchner and powered her shot past the waiting keeper into the back of the net. Hitchner, who played an excellent game, netted the Highlanders next goal a couple possessions later. The sophomore made a powerful run into the box, held off a defender, and expertly slotted her shot past the charging CCNY keeper.

After an influx of offense to begin the game, the Highlanders were content to rely on their defense to close out the contest. Mackenzie Paugh picked up her first shut out of the season, and after a double OT tie earlier this week, the Highlanders are back in the win column with their second of the season. Cairn will play next against Delaware Valley University on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 PM.
