YARDLEY, PA- On a rain-soaked Wednesday afternoon, the Highlanders hosted longtime rival Lancaster Bible College in a non-conference matchup. In a chippy, high-energy contest the Chargers came away with a 3-2 victory.
Â
The first half was played at a fervent pace with the Highlanders and Chargers both pushing the attack and placing an immense amount of pressure on the opposing backlines. The Highlanders dynamic forward
Brendan Keller tallied the afternoon's first goal and his first of the season in the 36
th minute. Keller gathered a perfectly-weighted chip through ball from
Paul Franco and smashed it into the bottom left corner of the Lancaster Bible goal. With the rain beginning to pour down, LBC responded quickly a minute later to tie the game. As the time quickly trickled down in the first half, the Chargers earned a corner with only 10 seconds remaining; playing a ball into the middle of the box that bounced around before falling at the feet of forward Rama Mugisha who netted his first goal of the season with only 5 seconds remaining to give LBC a 2-1 lead.
Â
The rain fell consistently through the halftime break, soaking the field and adding an extra element to a matchup that needs no help sustaining drama. The Highlanders senior midfielder
Joey Weaver leveled the playing field with a pinpoint finish into the right corner five minutes into the second half. Weaver's goal sparked a flurry of shots by the Highlanders, highlighted by an absolute laser from Weaver from outside of the eighteen, but LBC's keeper Jake Deterline was up to the task, parrying away each effort. There was a touch of drama in the 55
th minute when Cairn appeared to take the lead by finally knocking home an attempt off yet another corner, but unfortunately the goal was taken back due to a Cairn foul in the box. After the confusion, LBC took the lead once more in the 57
th minute when Jared Jordan took one touch on the left side, before curling a beautiful into the upper 90 over Highlander keeper
Grant Grogan's head. The Highlanders certainly had their chances over the remaining 30 minutes, but were unable to come away with the tying goal, dropping the match 3-2.
Â
Despite the loss, Cairn's offense showed great flashes this afternoon, with
Joey Weaver,
Brendan Keller,
Brett Kikendall, and
Brandon Hasko all showing an ability to take on defenders and create positive offense for the Highlanders. Cairn will travel to former conference opponent Cabrini University this Saturday for a match at 3:30 PM.
