Marks Sets Record, Highlanders Storm Past Nittany Lions

LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders defeated the Nittany Lions of Penn State Brandywine University in an out-of-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon to improve to 9-6 on the year.

The Highlanders started out slowly struggling to decipher PSU's ace Bradley Ulmer over the first couple innings. Cairn starter Eric Stinglen battled, settling in after a shaky first inning to shut down the Nittany Lions, limiting PSU to only one run over his four innings of work. The floodgates finally opened for the Highlanders in the fifth inning, junior Daniel Morales sparked the Cairn offense with a towering double to the right field fence. After Morales advanced to third on an error, Highlander DH Dan Bierc knocked him in for Cairn's first run of the day. Bierc promptly stole second, and came all the way around on an Andrew Philips single to tie the game for the Highlanders. Following the pattern, Philips swiped second base and was plated by the Highlanders stellar leadoff hitter Jacob Allen to give Cairn their first lead of the day. The Highlanders tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning when Brett Marks singled in Emilio Alvarez. Morales pitched three shut down innings to close out the game, earning his first save of the year to go along with a 1-3 performance at the plate. Jacob Allen and Brett Marks each tallied two hits for the Highlanders to go along with an RBI. In addition to Marks' offensive contributions, the Highlanders junior catcher broke his own record, throwing out his 15th and 16th baserunners already this season. Marks set the mark in 2016, when he threw out 15 would-be basestealers, but the junior has taken his defense to another level in 2018, lacing 16 of the 22 baserunners who dared to test him.

The Highlanders are back in action once more tomorrow afternoon, traveling to take on Lehman College at 3:30 PM.
