BRONX, NY- The Highlanders traveled north to take on the Lehman College Lightning on an overcast, gray afternoon. After a couple early inning fireworks, Cairn buckled down to blank Lehman over the last six innings and defeat the Lightning 6-5.
Cairn jumped on Lehman starter Jose Albrincole from the start; leadoff hitters
Jacob Allen and
Brian Amantia singled to set the table, shortstop Nate Wilson walked, and cleanup hitter
Emilio Alvarez singled to help his own cause and knock in Cairn's first run of the day.
Alejandro Fernandez grounded out to plate another run, and
Brett Marks and
Daniel Morales each singled as well to put the Highlanders ahead 4-0. Staked to a four run lead, Cairn starter
Emilio Alvarez dealt with some control problems in the first, issuing three walks to the Lightning. Fortunately, Alvarez never panicked, getting a strikeout and picking off Lehman third basemen Natanael Toribio at second to end the inning. The Highlanders chased Lehman's starter after just 1.1 innings when
Adam Juarez and
Andrew Philips hit back-to-back singles.
Brian Amantia knocked Philips home for the Highlanders fifth run of the day. Amantia made his mark again in the fifth, doubling to left center and eventually scoring on a wild pitch to give Cairn a 6-5 lead. Freshman
Carson Conradt shut down the Lightning, throwing a perfect three innings, before ceding the save to lefty
Isaac Morrison. Despite the game-tying run waiting on third base, Morrison battled back inducing a ground ball to end the game.
Freshmen
Brian Amantia and
Adam Juarez tallied three and two hits respectively, while Alvarez picked up his second win, and Morrison earned his first save of the year.
Cairn will play next Monday afternoon when the Highlanders welcome Lancaster Bible College to Langhorne. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
