Late Rally Leads Highlanders Past Shoremen

ASTON, PA- After a tough loss to Washington College (MD) in Florida, the Highlanders did not throw away their shot, using a late rally to slip past the Shoremen, 9-5 in an out-of-conference matchup.

Not wanting to squander a second chance at the 15-3 Washington College Shoremen, the Highlanders threw ace Sam Dralle and despite some minor control issues, the junior battled, keeping Cairn in the game and giving the offense a chance to win the game. Trailing 2-0 after the first, Highlanders slugger Alejandro Fernandez sparked the offense with a single to right center field. After a fielder's choice eliminated Fernandez on the basepaths, back-to-back singles for the Highlanders pair of hard-hitting Daniel's plated catcher Brett Marks for Cairn's first run of the day. The Highlanders tacked on two more runs to take the lead in the fourth when Andrew Philips rapped a single to center field, scoring both Brett Marks and Morales. The Shoremen retook the lead in the fifth, scoring two runs and chasing Cairn starter Dralle, but promising freshman reliever Isaac Morrison battled out of a jam in the fifth and shut the Shoremen down in order in the sixth for another two productive innings.  Spurred on by Morrison's shutdown frames, Cairn stayed scrappy, pushing across an unearned run in the sixth to tie the game, before opening it up in the seventh thanks to another 2 RBI single from Philips. When Fernandez and Brett Marks knocked home three more runs with their third hits of the day in the eighth, the Highlanders sealed their eight victory of the young season.

Freshman Nat Ross picked up the first win of his collegiate career with a solid showing, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings, while the Highlanders bottom of the order came through in a major way with Fernandez and Marks tallying the aforementioned 3 hits, Morales scoring two runs and managing two hits, and Philips with a monster 2 hit, 4 RBI performance.

The Highlanders will be back home on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Penn State – Brandywine for a single nine inning. First pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
