Zellner and Costa Tally Two, Highlanders Win Third Straight

LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders kept the train rolling Thursday afternoon, dispatching their third straight CSAC opponent by defeating the Notre Dame (MD) University Gators 4-0.

The Highlanders wasted no time, staking their claim to the lead just 8 minutes in when Brea Zellner ran onto a picture-perfect through ball from Katie Ruitto and expertly slotted her shot past the charging Notre Dame goalkeeper.  Zellner's speed proved too much for the Notre Dame defense to handle as she flew through the back line just six minutes later, finishing her second goal of the game and third in the last two games.  Surged on by the confidence that only two goals can bring Zellner continued to take defenders off the dribble, and found herself in open space once more in the 20th minute. The sophomore played a perfect cross in the middle to freshman Lauren Costa who volleyed her attempt past the Notre Dame goalie with ease to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead. After so much action over the first 20 minutes, the next 25 passed without much fanfare and Cairn entered the break with a 3-0 lead.

The Highlanders kept up the pressure in the second half, earning six corner kicks in a three minute span to keep the Gators on their heels. Costa and Dakota Hitchner each fired a couple excellent shots that slipped past the post and kept the game at a three goal lead. Costa broke through with her second goal of the game in the 75th minute, gathering a long ball from Tori Ruitto and firing her shot with authority into the back of the net. With a four goal lead, the Highlanders eased their way to another victory, thoroughly defeating the Gators and notching yet another shutout for Mackenzie Paugh.

The Highlanders have a bit of a break, not playing again until Monday afternoon when they will host Medgar Evers College at 4:00 PM.
