HACKETTSTOWN, NJ- In a tough away game against the CSACs third ranked Centenary Cyclones, the Highlanders summoned a last second victory once again with
Brendan Keller's 90
th minute header.
Â
After being bounced from the playoffs in Hackettstown last season, the Highlanders got off to an inauspicious start once again when the Cyclones Josh Weiss ran onto a loose ball inside of the six, firing past Kam Clark and giving Centenary the lead just 50 seconds into the match. The Highlanders, jolted awake by the early goal, rebounded and began to pressure the Centenary back line with both
Brendan Keller and
Joey Weaver firing off countless excellent shots.
Â
Cairn's barrage on the Cyclone goal paid off in the 47
th minute when stalwart midfielder
Paul Franco found his way onto a perfectly placed free kick from Ty Smith, nodding the ball up and over the keeper and leveling the game. Buoyed by Franco's goal, the Highlanders kept up their relentless attack, nearly breaking the deadlock in the 63
rd minute when
Josiah Nistorenko's shot hit the crossbar. While the Highlanders dominated the half to the tune of 16 shots, the score stood even as time trickled down and the game appeared to be destined for overtime. As the seconds ticked by in the last minute of gameplay, the Highlanders earned a throw in in Centenary's half. The Highlanders strong armed freshman
Josh Goodyear rushed over, launching a soaring throw into the box and into the path of Franco. As he's done so many times before, Franco flicked the throw in over the defense and towards the back post. With a true flair for the dramatic,
Brendan Keller flew towards Franco's headed pass, leapt into the air and headed the game winner home, snatching victory for the Highlanders yet again.
The win notched an incredible 10 straight for the Highlanders, and gave Cairn a perfect 5-0 record in conference play. The Highlanders will host Bryn Athyn College at 3:30 PM Tuesday afternoon. Prior to the Highlanders final regular season contest, Cairn will honor the incredible careers of
Tyler Smith,
Paul Franco,
Joey Weaver,
Jared Dodson,
Matt Smith, and Dan Rye.
