LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders took to the pitch against the Bryn Athyn Lions Tuesday afternoon for their final regular season tilt of the season, seeking to stretch their win streak to 11 games and keep their undefeated CSAC record intact. Prior to kick off, the Highlanders took a couple moments to honor a stellar senior class for their services over the past four years.
Joey Weaver,
Tyler Smith,
Paul Franco,
Jared Dodson,
Daniel Rye, and
Matt Smith comprised the special senior class that provided a truly transformational impact to the Highlanders program.
First Half
Riding high due to the special occasion, the Highlanders wasted no time, pouncing on the Bryn Athyn back line and springing Weaver,
Brendan Keller, and
Brandon Hasko in on goal early and often, leading to 8 shots in the first 15 minutes of play. The Highlanders notched their first goal of the afternoon from a fitting character as Weaver slotted home a Barcelona-esque team goal in the 9
th minute.
Brett Kikendall played a perfectly-weighted through ball to a streaking
Josiah Nistorenko. The freshman took one touch before slipping a beautiful cross into the path of Weaver who fired home his 5
th of the season. The Highlanders kept up the attack, as senior
Jared Dodson got in on the action in the 38
th minute.
Josh Goodyear launched one of his patented throw ins towards the box, where
Tyler Smith promptly flicked a header onward to the foot of Dodson, who buried it home to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead. Not satisfied with the two goal lead, the Highlanders underclassmen got involved when speedy sophomore Tim Smith notched his third goal of the season to take the Highlanders into halftime holding to a comfortable 3-0 lead.
SECOND HALF
With an undefeated CSAC record in the works, the Highlanders altered their strategy in the second half, pulling back their midfielders and seeking to ride out the second half smoothly, and injury free. The strategy proved to be fruitful, as Cairn limited Bryn Athyn to three shots over 90 minutes, with only one shot on goal. Despite employing a more defensive strategy, the Highlander were able to produce a couple individual offensive moments of brilliance in the second half.
Joey Weaver continued his storybook senior day performance when he stepped up to a free kick from 20 yards out. With uncommon poise, Weaver curled his attempt around the wall and deposited the free kick into the right side, extending the Highlanders lead to 4-0.
