Highlanders Leap Past Lions Thanks to Ruitto's OT Goal

BRYN ATHYN, PA- The Highlanders took on Bryn Athyn in CSAC play Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lions 1-0 and upping their conference record to 4-1 after Tori Ruitto's incredible goal in the first minute of overtime.

The first half passed without much fanfare, as Bryn Athyn notched a few chances early on, with Cairn's best couple chances coming about a half hour into play. The Highlanders Lauren Costa and Brea Zellner each fired shots that forced Bryn Athyn's Allie Warren into difficult saves. Both teams increased their offensive pressure in the second half, but each team's back line did an excellent job of stifling all incoming offensive attacks. Cairn's Carly Eubank, Tori Ruitto, Sierra Kiekel, and Ellen Beck played excellent soccer to keep the Lions off the board, not to mention keeper Mackenzie Paugh who made 6 excellent saves in the second half. At the end of regulation, the score stood even as neither team managed to find the back of the net; however, the Highlanders Ruitto sisters would change that quickly into the first overtime period. Just 49 seconds into OT, Cairn earned a corner kick that Katie Ruitto floated perfectly into the center of the box. Ruitto's corner found the head of her younger sister Tori, who headed her team leading 6th goal of the season into the back of the net.

With the win, the Highlanders have now played 6 straight games without a loss, and improved to 8-3-3 on the season. The Highlanders next match will be Tuesday afternoon against Clarks Summit University, where they will also honor seniors Mackenzie Paugh, Carly Eubank, and Laura Tarbert.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
