Ruitto's Last Second Goal Lifts Highlanders to Tie

ABINGTON, PA- The Highlanders took on Penn State Abington in their final non-conference match of the season. After two hard fought halves, and two overtimes, the Highlanders and Nittany Lions played to an even 3-3 draw.

The Highlanders Katie Ruitto stayed hot after her one goal, four assist performance earlier this week. Ruitto volleyed a rebounded shot from her sister into the back of the net in just the 13th minute to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, Abington battled back in front of their home crowd, scoring two goals just six minutes apart to retake the lead. The Highlanders Brea Zellner showed a flair for the dramatic by leveling the score with just 5 seconds left in the first half. Zellner raced past the defense and fired her shot past the keeper and into the back of the net.

With the score set at 2-2 entering the second half both teams ratcheted up the offensive pressure, seeking to gain the game-winning goal. A header goal put Abington ahead in the 78th minute and the Highlanders four game winning streak appeared to be headed to an end. Zellner and Victoria Ruitto each fired multiple shots, forcing PSU-Abington Mary Kate Smith into three difficult saves. With time rapidly winding down, Victoria Ruitto fired one more shot from long distance. With only thirty seconds on the clock, Ruitto's shot stunned Abington, rocketing into the goal and sending the game to overtime tied at 3- apiece.

Neither team mustered a shot in the first overtime, but the Highlanders threatened in the second OT. Katie Ruitto played a corner kick into the box, Dakota Hitchner and Zellner each also had great chances, however, the Highlanders simply ran out of time and were unable to notch the game-winning goal.

While the "win" streak may be over with the tie, the Highlanders will still enter the rest of their CSAC slate with great confidence. Cairn will travel to Bryn Athyn College to take on the Lions at 1:00 PM.
