Women's Soccer Falls 4-0 in Home Opener vs Penn St. Brandywine

LANGHORNE, PA – In today's match between Penn State Brandywine Nittany Lions and The Cairn University Highlanders, the contest was a one sided affair despite The Highlanders lasting fight. The Lions started off quickly with two goals in the first half, both by Brianna Banks. The final after regulation was 4-0 in favor of Penn State Brandywine.

The defense for the Highlanders was on high-alert for the full 90 minutes as Brandywine outshot Cairn 34-3 in the contest. The Lions attack started off in the 28th minute as Banks rifled a shot to the right corner for the first goal of the game. The Highlanders attempted a rebuttal in the 43rd sending Sophomore Katie Ruitto into the box for an opportunity for goal. The strike was saved on a dive just in the reach of the Lion's goal keeper.

Making their first start of the season on the backline for the Highlanders, Carly Eubank, Sierra Kikel, Sami Thompson, and Haley Tinney teamed up for some crucial defense throughout the match keeping Cairn close.

Banks found another goal in the 44th minute for her 4th goal of the season.  Heading into the break, Brandywine would hold a two goal lead over the host Highlanders.
With the score set at 2-0 after the half, The Highlanders had hope in the efforts of Senior Mackenzie Paugh, who had 12 saves on the afternoon. The Lions held a strong possession in the match, but The Highlanders fought with tenacity and support for one another that couldn't be smothered.

In the 76th minute, the Lions added another tally for a third goal of the match. In the very next minute, Junior Payton Emerick broke free from midfield with an opportunity to get Cairn on the board. As she dribbled up the field, she shook two defenders and released an unbridled strike. The ball ricocheted off the outstretched arm of the keeper who was able to thwart the scoring chance. Emerick was accompanied by Freshman Sara Haychodock on attack as both proved to be consistent offensive forces.

The Lions put up another goal in the 90th minute to finish The Highlanders 4-0.

Head coach for the Highlanders, Kristen O'Connell was asked for her thoughts on the game and team's performance,. O'Connell commented, "I am proud of the way these girls came together. I was extremely encouraged by their game. They played with passion and heart, and most importantly they played for one another. Only great things to come."
