Cyclones Whirl Past Highlanders to End the Streak

LANGHORNE, PA – The Highlanders battled it out in an 0-2 loss to the Centenary Cyclones. The highly competitive CSAC contest kept fans on the edge of their seat throughout the finale of Cairn's homecoming weekend.

The teams traded blows the entire contest, sophomore Brett Kikendall had one of the day's best chances in the 39th minute, when he split the midfield and fired a left-footed shot just over the crossbar. The Cyclones got on the board first at the very end of the first half with a bouncing goal over the top of Cairn keeper Colin Baker.

Brendan Keller had an early run for the Highlanders in the 49th minute. Keller escaped the defense and appeared to be in on an open goal, but the Cairn forward was taken down by the Cyclones diving keeper. Despite the pleas of the Highlander crowd, no foul was called and Cairn had one of their best chances wiped out. The Cyclones strung together three shots over the next minute, putting great pressure on the Cairn defense, but the backline, led by Ryan Leatherman, held fast and denied each Cyclone attempt on goal.

In a scrappy, sloppy game, Centenary was able to tack on an insurance goal in the 56th minute when Justin White received a through ball and slotted past a charging Baker. Down two goals to the CSAC's defending champions Coach Luke Gibson altered his tactics; pressing the entire team up and relying on a daring offside trap to provide much of the defense for the remaining 30 minutes. The strategy worked to a T as Leatherman and Tyler Smith stayed in sync and forced the Cyclones into 5 offside violations, however the Highlanders could not muster enough offense to bring the game back within their reach. The score was settled at 2-0, and today's loss ended a 6 game winning streak for the Highlanders and sets their CSAC record at 2-1.

The Highlanders will welcome Gwynedd Mercy University to Langhorne on Wednesday Oct. 4th for their next conference matchup.
