LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders battled against the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy in a conference matchup this sunny Wednesday afternoon. The Griffins came out on top of this intense, but sloppy matchup, winning by a score of 2-1.
Cairn played a fairly uneventful first half where much of the action was located in the midfield. The Highlanders had a couple potshots at the net, but were unable to come up with anything substantial that led to the go-ahead goal.
John Michael Redding had the Highlanders best chance of the first half when he ran onto a beautiful cross from
Joey Weaver, however the midfielder was unable to convert his chance in front of goal. Cairn had 6 shots in the first half, forcing the Gwynedd Mercy keeper into 4 saves.
The Griffins got on board first in the 48th minute when Cole Smith floated a free kick into the box from 35 yards out, the ball carried all the way over keeper
Colin Baker's head and into the back of the net. The Highlanders played very tentative throughout the early goings, but jumped into action after giving up a goal. Cairn peppered the Gwynedd Mercy net, and was able to string together more and more positive offensive possesions- thanks in large part to the commanding midfield presence of
Paul Franco.
Joey Weaver, who played an excellent game for the Highlanders on the outside, matched the Griffins goal with a wonder strike of his own off a volley in the 65th minute. After a free kick bounced out his way, Weaver's scything kick powered through the defense and into the back of the net. Both teams frantically searched for the winning goal, and Gwynedd would find the breakthrough in the 84th with a header that squirted past Baker and into the back of the net.
Cairn will look to get back on track this weekend when they travel to Scranton, PA to take on Marywood University at 1 PM, Saturday afternoon.
