CLARKS SUMMIT, PA- The Highlanders women's soccer team put in a dominating performance on the pitch this afternoon, defeating the Defenders of Clarks Summit University by a score of 5-1.Â
The Highlanders traveled to Clarks Summit seeking a bounce back victory and their first conference win against the Defenders. Showing their typical resilience, the Highlanders did not buckle when they conceded an early goal, instead bouncing back and scoring 5 times over the next 77 minutes.Â
Payton Emerick would net the Highlanders first goal of the afternoon in the 32nd minute, and
Kelsey Lewis would put the Highlanders ahead a mere 42 seconds before the horn. Lewis stepped up to a long free kick and fired a spectacular shot that caught the crossbar and bounced into the net. The first half was incredibly hard fought with both teams totaling 9 shots, and keeper
Mackenzie Paugh tallying 5 saves.
The Highlanders took control of the second half from the tap, led by
Sony MacBain who earned a start for the second period. MacBain would score in the 50th minute and again in the 58th with a beautiful header to seal the game. MacBain's two goals sandwiched another
Courtney Novak goal in the 56th minute. Novak gathered the ball inside the box and blasted a shot off the goalies hands and into the goal.
The Highlanders would complete their first conference victory of the season and improve to 2-6 on the year. They will host Immaculata University this Saturday at 1:30 PM.Â
