LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders broke above .500 for the first time this season as they defeated the Wolverines of Wesley College in a truly captivating, back-and-forth affair.
In a first half played largely in the midfield, the Highlanders were able to break through for a couple excellent chances. A great individual run from
Brett Kikendall led to a
John Michael Redding cross that found the head of
Brady Dorman right in front of the net. Dorman's header seemed goal bound until the Wesley keeper sprawled out for a beautiful kick save. Minutes later, Kikendall, once again creating the action, played a perfectly weighted through ball that sprung forward
Brendan Keller in on net, where his shot was once again denied by the Wesley keeper. The Wolverines took control over the last 10 minutes of the half, threatening with multiple corners and a powerful shot from CB Jaki Farlow. However, Cairn's young keeper
Colin Baker showed incredible poise between the pipes, denying each threat from the Wesley attackers.
The Highlanders brought the intensity right off the tap in the second half, as midfielder
Brandon Hasko played a beautiful ball over the top, putting the Highlanders
Joey Weaver in on goal yet again where he was thwarted once more by the Wolverine's excellent keeper. Kikendall also burned the edge of the post with a shot from just outside of the box a few possessions later.
The imposing
Paul Franco played an excellent game in the center of the midfield, winning virtually every 50/50 ball and controlling the air for the Highlanders. Franco's play provided a much-needed edge for the Highlanders in an exceptionally chippy contest, the junior also served as a crucial link between the Highlanders offensive and defensive efforts.
As the Highlanders pressed forward seeking a breakthrough goal they were denied time and again by a last-ditch effort from the Wesley defense or a shot that found the wrong side of the post. Freshman
Ryan Leatherman played a huge role in Cairn's clean sheet, playing with a steadiness that belies his inexperience. The center back arrived at the correct spot time and again for the Highlanders, creating a formidable triangle in the center of the field between
Tyler Smith, Franco, and himself.
The goalless, but thrilling match headed to overtime as neither team broke through in regular time.
Brendan Keller provided the first chance of overtime with a slick move to get past the defender and put a dangerous cross in front of the goal. Keller would not be denied, when in the 97
th minute he ran onto a
Brady Dorman through ball, firing a shot towards the net that slipped under the outstretched goalkeeper's arms.
Cairn remains undefeated at home on the season, and improved to 4-3 on the year. The Highlanders will be back in action this Wednesday when they travel to Morristown, NJ to take on the College of Saint Elizabeth at 4 PM.
