Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lions Roar Past Highlanders in Season Opener

BRYN ATHYN, PA - The Cairn women's soccer team opened their 2017 campaign on the road this afternoon as they took on the Bryn Athyn Lions.  The Highlanders fell by a final score of 8-0.  Bryn Athyn was able to avenge the loss to the Highlanders that they suffered last year by a score of 3-0 in favor of Cairn.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead and kept applying pressure to the young Highlanders team.  Bryn Athyn would earn two corner kicks in the second minute of play, but Cairn was able to keep the Lions off of the board.

Cairn was held off the attack of Bryn Athyn for the first 11 minutes, but it was in the 12th minute that the Lions would strike first.  A through ball found the foot of the forward and she was able to beat the keeper to give Bryn Athyn a 1-0 lead.  Bryn Athyn would strike again in the 13th minute, as Kayla Heffer made the initial save on a shot, but could not hold onto the ball and Bryn Athyn would find the back of the net once again.

The 21st minute saw Bryn Athyn score for the third time in the first stanza.  After a few substitutions, the Highlanders were able to get their first real scoring opportunity.  Angela Paskitti would rip a shot that was just off target, but since it was last touched by the Lions, the play resulted in a corner kick for the Highlanders.  Sophmore Katie Ruitto sent the corner kick through the box and it would find the head of Paskitti, who headed the ball just off the crossbar, and Bryn Athyn was able to escape the threat still with a clean sheet.

The Lions would add one more goal and take a 4-0 lead into the break.

The second half started out strong for the Highlanders, as again they would threaten with shots on goal and corner kicks, but just were not able to beat the Bryn Athyn keeper.

Bryn Athyn was able to add four more goals in the second half, and walked away with an opening day victory by a final score of 8-0.

The Highlanders will be back in action Wednesday afternoon, as they will take on the Phoenix of Wilson College in their home opener.  Game time is slated for 4 pm.
