Highlanders Topped by CSAC's Top-Ranked Cyclones

The Highlanders hosted the Colonial States Athletic Conference's top-ranked Cyclones of Centenary University this afternoon, losing by a score of 2-0.

Cairn played an excellent first half, limiting the Cyclones and their high-powered offense to one goal. Highlanders' goalkeeper Mackenzie Paugh was particularly fantastic, facing 16 shots and making 9 saves. The senior showed her stellar reflexes with two beautiful saves on close-range Centenary shots. Despite Paugh's excellent half, Centenary got on the board when top-scorer Brooke Carty ran onto a cross and nudged the ball past Paugh's outstretched hands and into the right corner of the net. The Highlanders put a great deal of stress on their defense as they managed only 1 shot over the first 45 minutes, and conceded 7 corner kicks as well as the aforementioned 16 shots.

Cairn's offensive efforts surged in the second half as the Highlanders adjusted to Centenary's style of play and sought the equalizer off the counter-attack. Cairn stood strong for nearly the entire second half, as Paugh and the backline were in total unison to repeatedly deny the Cyclone attacks. Sony MacBain had the Highlanders best chance of the day, when she raced past the defense and fired a shot wide of the charging Cyclone keeper, but unfortunately wide of the goal as well. As the Highlanders pressed forward looking for a tie, Carty would put the game out of reach with her second of the afternoon in the 83rd minute.

The Highlanders' highlights of the match can be directly pointed at Paugh's 16 save effort, and the return of Captain Natalie Lyon from injury. Embracing a more limited role off the bench due to injury, Lyon's experience and spirit on the pitch will be invaluable to the Highlanders' efforts over the rest of the season.

Cairn has played great soccer lately, and should hold their heads high as the Cyclones entered Langhorne atop the CSAC standings at 6-1. The Highlanders battle hard every match and will certainly welcome the challenge of four more conference matches over the remaining two weeks of the season. Cairn's next contest is at Neumann University this Saturday, 10/14, at 4:30 PM.
