Marcy, NY - The Cairn men's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Friday evening to open the SUNY Poly Wildcat Invitational. The Highlanders were swept by the host Wildcats 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21) to open the weekend and then fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13) by the Wentworth Leopards in the nightcap.
The Highlanders will take the court tomorrow against Elms College and Wells College to complete the tournament.
SUNY Poly defeated Cairn University 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21)
The Highlanders began their weekend with a match against the host SUNY Poly Wildcats. In the match the Highlanders dropped all three games and were swept by the Wildcats. Cairn put together their strongest set of the season in the first set. The Highlanders collected 11 kills in the set and swung at a .375 clip. Despite outhitting the Wildcats with a .375 hitting percentage vs. .320 mark for SUNY Poly, the Highlanders dropped the first set 25-21.
The Wild cats controlled the second set downing the Highlanders 25-14. Cairn rebounded in the third set, but it was not enough as the Wildcat completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the set and a 3-0 triumph in the match.
Juston Wolgemuth led the Highlanders with seven kills in the match.
Andy Willits was just one behind with six kills.
Matthew Gump dished out a dozen assists and
Ryan Ludvik collected 12 digs, both team-highs in the match.
Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated Cairn University 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13)
The Highlanders took on the Wentworth Leopards in their second-match on Friday night. Wentworth took care of the Highlanders in straight-sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13).
The Leopards hit over .400 in each of the three sets. They notched hitting percentages of .450, .583, and .400 compared to hitting percentages of .231, .143, and .133 for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders finished with 23 kills in the match with 19 of those kills coming from the duo of
Andy Willits (10 kills) and
Micah Godshall (9).
Ryan Ludvik led the Highlanders with eight digs and 13 assists.
Matthew Gump collected 10 assists in the match.
As mentioned, the Highlanders will take the floor tomorrow when they take on Elms College at 11:00 a.m. and Wells College at 3:00 p.m.
