Langhorne, PA - With two minutes and change remaining in regulation, the Cairn men's basketball team trailed Medgar Evers 66-60.
Zachary Dolton finished a layup to cut the deficit to four points before
Jeremiah Harris connected from the right-wing to make it a one-point game with 90 seconds left. After Medgar Evers hit a jumper with a minute remaining,
Gerroid Doughty II took a pass from Harris and buried a triple to tie the game at 68-68.
Â
After a stop on the defensive end, the Highlanders went to Doughty for a last second shot. The shot never came as Doughty was fouled while he drove from the left baseline. Doughty stepped to the free throw line and missed his first attempt, but buried his second to give Cairn their first lead in over 29 minutes of game-play. A half-court shot from the Cougars at the buzzer went off the mark and the Highlanders held on for their first victory of the year.
Â
As mentioned, the Highlanders had to play from behind for a vast majority of the game. After a layup in transition by Harris and a three by
Eric Jacobs, the Highlanders took a 10-6 lead eight minutes into the game. The Cougars responded with back-to-back threes to take a 12-10 lead. While the Highlanders would tie the game multiple times throughout the game, they could not take control of the game until Doughty's late free throw.
Â
The Cougars grew their lead to as many as 10 points on two occasions in the first-half, but the Highlanders climbed back into the game and cut the lead to just three points at the break.
Â
Cairn finished the half on a 10-3 run that was fueled by three different scorers including five points by Harris, a three by
Zachary Dolton, and
Tyler Carrier's first career bucket. The run brought the Highlanders within three at 32-29.
Â
That lead was quickly erased within the first two minutes of the second-half as the Highlanders continued their run into the second period.
Zachary Dolton put through a layup off a pass from Doughty to tie the game at 35-35.
Â
Medgar Evers responded swiftly and pushed their lead back to six points at 41-35 with a trio of layups. The Highlanders came back to tie the game at 43-43 just over two minutes later after an 8-2 run of their own.
Â
The Cougars pushed their lead to as many as seven points midway through the second-half and eventually led by six with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. This set the stage for the Highlanders to get into the win column for the third time on the season in dramatic fashion. Cairn has played eight games this season decided by single digits. Before Monday they were 1-7 in those games.
Â
However the script was flipped on Monday and the Highlanders were the ones hitting key shots when they needed them most. In the final 2:03 of Monday's game the Highlanders were a perfect 3-3 from the field including clutch threes from Harris and Doughty.
Â
The clutch play gave the Highlanders a much needed 69-68 victory. With the win the Highlanders snap an eight-game losing streak and move to 3-11 on the season.
Â
Gerroid Doughty II led four double-digit scorers for the Highlanders with 20 points.
Zachary Dolton filled up the stat-sheet on Monday with 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Â
The Highlanders will next take the floor on Wednesday night when they host Cabrini at 8:00 p.m. in the Mason Activity Center.
