Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cavaliers Hold Highlanders at Bay in Conference Battle

Langhorne, PA - The Cairn men's basketball team fell to the Cabrini Cavaliers on Wednesday night 74-65. Gerroid Doughty II dropped 17 points in the loss to lead the Highlanders, but Cairn did not have a match for Cabrini's Tyheim Monroe who went for 22 points and 18 rebounds for his 14th double-double of the season to lead all of NCAA Division III.

The Highlanders held as large as a six-point lead seven minutes into the contest, but just six minutes later the Cavaliers had swung the tide and held a nine-point lead thanks in large-part to a 13-0 run. The Cavs held an eight-point lead at the break with a 30-22 lead.

After scoring the first two buckets of the second-half the Cavaliers held a double-digit lead for the next 19-plus minutes. The Highlanders cut the lead to single-digits when Garrett Burch connected on a layup with 16 seconds left, but it was too little too late as the Cavaliers earned the victory with a 74-65 final.

The contest opened as a low-scoring affair. Five minutes into the game, the Cavaliers led 3-2. After a Cabrini layup, the Highlanders called a timeout and brought in a new squad. With Seil Park, Nick Castillo, and Jeremiah Harris entering the game, the Highlanders brought a new energy to the floor after the timeout. Cairn immediately went on a 9-0 run over the next 90 seconds to take a 11-5 lead.

The Cavaliers promptly countered with a 17-5 run that put them up 22-13 after a pair of free throws from Deryl Bagwell with 6:48 remaining in the half. Seil Park finally ended the scoreless run for the Highlanders with a layup.

The Highlanders and Cavaliers then traded buckets for the remainder of the half and Cabrini held a 30-22 advantage at the half.

Two buckets in the first 90 seconds of the second-half put the Highlanders down 12 points and Cabrini would hold a double-digit lead for the majority of the second-half.

Cairn would cut the Cabrini lead to 10 points on six occasions in the second-half, but they would not cut the deficit to single-digits until Burch's late layup.

As noted above, Cabrini's Monroe was the player of the game. He went for his 14th double-double with 22 points and 18 rebounds. He also added three blocks, a steal, and a pair of assists in the Cavaliers' seventh conference victory of the season.

Gerroid Doughty II led three Highlanders in double-figures with 17 points. Doughty was joined by Jeremiah Harris, who finished with 12 points, a game removed from a career-high 14 against Medgar Evers, and Seil Park (10 points).

The Highlanders will next take the floor on Saturday when they host Immaculata University at 3:00 p.m.
