Immaculata, PA – The Cairn women's soccer fell to the Mighty Macs of Immaculata on a damp and dreary Thursday afternoon by a 8-2 final score. The Highlanders were paced by a pair of goals from
Meghan Wilson, her fifth and sixth tallies of the season.
It looked as if the Mighty Macs were going to draw first blood when a bouncing ball cleared the head of Cairn keeper
Hannah Barker. With Barker out of the goal, Carly Mirachi sent a shot that went wide right of the open goal in just the third minute. Moments later the Highlanders quickly pushed the other way and
Payton Emerick sent a cross into the middle of the box for
Meghan Wilson who connected for her first goal of the afternoon.
Immaculata wasted no time getting the tally back with a goal in the sixth minute after an intercepted pass and a shot past Barker into the right-side of the goal.
With the score knotted at 1-1, the Highlanders got off a couple of shots including an attempt by
Hannah Morrison that was turned away by the Immaculata keeper in the 18th minute. In the 30th minute the Might Macs would take the lead with a rip from just outside the box on the left-side. The ball skipped into the goal and put Cairn in a 2-1 hole.
In the 42nd minute
Courtney Novak had an opportunity down the right-side after she beat her defender and the goalie when they both closed in on her, but her shot went wide and the deficit remained one for the Highlanders at the break.
In the opening moments of the second-half, the Might Macs doubled their lead with a goal from Carly Mirachi in the 46th minute. Immaculata went on to score two more goals in the 67th and 68th minute, opening up a 5-1 lead.
Wilson did tally a second goal on the afternoon in the 68th minute to break up the Mighty Macs' momentum, but Immaculata found the back of the net three more times in the final 16 minutes for the final score of 8-2.
Four Highlanders took two shots apiece with
Meghan Wilson and
Payton Emerick both putting their two attempts on frame.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in the CSAC. Thursday's match ends a six-game road stretch for the Highlanders and Cairn will next take the field on Homecoming with a home match against The City College of New York at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
