Dover, DE - The Cairn men's soccer team fell to the Wesley Wolverines on Saturday afternoon 4-0 in a non-conference match. The Highlanders generated two quality chances in the second-half but neither could result in a goal.
Brendan Keller hit a volley in the 47th minute that rattled off the crossbar and then in the 86th minute
Zack Nelson had the Wesley goalie make a sliding save against his breakaway opportunity to keep the clean sheet for the Wolverines.
The Highlanders kept the Wolverines off the board until the 40th minute when Matt Waldron found the back of the net on the 17th shot of the half. In the first-half, Wesley outshot the Highlanders 19-4 but only led 1-0 on the scoreboard.
After the break the Highlander came out quickly with a chance in the 47th minute. A throw-in was flicked on into the box, where Keller hit a full volley off the crossbar but the ball was cleared away and the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Wolverines.
The Wesley lead quickly doubled with a goal less than five minutes into the second-half with a goal in the 50th minute. The Wolverines added a third goal in the 53rd minute and their fourth and final tally with just seconds left in the contest in the 90th minute.
As mentioned the Highlanders had an opportunity in the 86th minute with
Zack Nelson on a breakaway but the Wesley goalie came sliding out to turn away Nelson's shot.
On the afternoon the Highlanders were outshot 32-11.
Brett Kikendall (three shots) and Keller (four shots) were the two Highlanders to record multiple shots in the contest.
The Highlanders will next take the pitch on Thursday afternoon when they host Lebanon Valley College at 4:00 p.m. in Langhorne, PA.
