Gwynedd Valley, PA – The Highlanders traveled to Gwynedd Mercy University on Friday afternoon and lost an 8-6 game to the Griffins in conference action. Cairn struck first and scored four runs in the first inning but were unable to score again until the 7th inning and ultimately suffered the loss.
The Highlanders went through all nine batters in the top of the first; six of which had a hit in the inning.
Daniel Morales,
Matthew Buckery, and
Brett Marks all had singles to score runs. The fourth was tacked on after Morales scored on a wild pitch.
Gwynedd Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and later tied the game in the third inning after an RBI-single and a sacrifice fly. The Griffins took the lead in the fourth inning on a single to center field by Beau Fleming. Gwynedd Mercy added three more in the inning on a bases-clearing double by Justin Curtin.
In the top of the 7th inning, Cairn cut into the Griffins' lead after Morales hit a sacrifice fly to score
Joey Nieves-Markee.
Brett Marks got on base in the 8th inning with a triple and was later hit home by
Keith LeNoue.
The Highlanders were unable to add any more runs in the 9th inning and
Matt Trotman was given the loss as a relief pitcher.
Daniel Morales pitched the final four innings of the game for Cairn and kept Gwynedd Mercy off the scoreboard in the process.
Pat Ryder was awarded the win for the Griffins; also a relief pitcher. Gwynedd Mercy improved to 14-14 overall and 7-3 in the CSAC with the win. Cairn dropped to 16-15 overall and 2-11 in the conference with the loss. The Griffins will visit the Highlanders on Saturday to finish the series with a doubleheader.
