Cairn Beats Centenary 5-4 On Fernandez Walk-Off

Langhorne, PA – The Highlanders won their second conference game of the season after a dramatic walk-off hit from Alejandro Fernandez against Centenary College. Cairn's dugout stormed the field to meet Fernandez at first base after the hit drove home Daniel Morales from third base.

Morales not only scored the winning run but also pitched in the top of the ninth inning to keep the Cyclones from adding any more runs. Morales struck out two Cyclones and later got on base with a single to right field.

The game started out as a pitching duel, although Cairn's Eric Stinglen won the battle through the first six innings. In those first six innings, Stinglen gave up just one hit in the fourth inning before entering the seventh.

By comparison, the Highlanders had 10 hits through the first six innings. Cairn scored two runs in the fifth inning after a double from Aaron Takacs scored Joey Nieves-Markee and Matthew Buckery.

The Highlanders added a third run in the sixth inning after Buckery hit a sacrifice fly and scored Jacob Allen.

Centenary then shifted a gear in the seventh inning and got their second hit of the game on an enormous home run to left field by Nick Daniele. The next three batters all singled and the Cyclones scored two more runs in the process to tie the game.

Stinglen was pulled off the mound after the Cyclones tied the game at 3-3 in favor of reliever Matt Trotman. The Cyclones then took the lead 4-3 on a single from Sean Donovan in the same inning.

Neither team scored runs in the eighth inning, despite Cairn putting runners in scoring position. Aaron Takacs then led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk and a stolen base.

Takacs was driven home from second to tie the game at 4-4 after Caleb Lang reached on an error by the third baseman. Daniel Morales' single put Lang at third base as the winning run with no outs.

Brett Marks was then intentionally walked and the Highlanders had bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jacob Allen hit a grounder back to the third baseman but he was able to grab it and throw home to get the force out.

Marks and Morales both advanced on the fielder's choice and the next batter was Fernandez for his first at-bat of the game. Fernandez subbed in at third base in the top of the ninth after Morales went from first base to pitcher and other infield changes were made.

The second conference win this season marks the first time the Highlanders have won more than one conference game in a season while in the CSAC.

Cairn moved to 14-10 overall this season and 2-6 in the conference with the win. Centenary dropped to 12-10 overall and 2-5 in the CSAC with the loss. The Highlanders will travel to the Cyclones tomorrow for their doubleheader.
