Moosic, PA – The Highlanders won their first conference game of the season on Sunday afternoon after defeating Keystone College 5-4 in exciting fashion. The winning run came in the top of the ninth inning on a deep three-run homerun by
Caleb Lang over the left-center field fence.
The game took place at PNC Field, home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders; the AAA affiliate of the New York Yankees. The game was also part of the 4th Annual Bill Howerton Strikeout Cancer Weekend.
Cairn was down to their last out of the game as
Caleb Lang stepped up to the plate with the tying runs on first and second base. With Yeison Andujar closing in on his eighth save of the season, Lang blasted a three-run homer to give the Highlanders the lead. Lang finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and collected his third homerun of the season.
Daniel Morales was called onto the mound for the Highlanders to try and get the save and the win for
Matt Trotman. Despite putting two runners on base, Morales finished off the game by striking out Alex Herceg swinging.
Morales also hit the Highlanders' only other RBI of the game in the fifth inning, scoring
Joey Nieves-Markee. Nieves-Markee scored three runs with one walk, while
Aaron Takacs scored one run and was walked four times.
John Burlaga started the game on the mound for the Highlanders and pitched six and one-third innings with three strikeouts and two runs scored. Trotman pitched one and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs but earned the win after being in the game when Lang hit his homer.
The Giants were led by Louis Reyes who went 2-for-4 in the game with one run scored. Billy Nelson started the game on the bump for Keystone and went for six innings with five strikeouts and three walks.
Cairn improved to 11-10 this season with the win and 1-6 in the conference. Keystone dropped to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the loss. The Highlanders will return to the field on Tuesday, April 12th to host Summit University for a doubleheader.
