Highlanders Fall To No. 5 Rutgers Newark On Senior Night

Langhorne, PA – On senior night for the Highlanders, Cairn lost a 3-0 match to No. 5 Rutgers Newark in CVC conference action. David Dager was recognized as the only senior on this year's team before the match.
 
The Highlanders started out the match strong and pulled out to a 9-5 lead. From there Micah Godshall and Andy Willits traded kills and stretched the lead to 11-6. Cairn stayed five points ahead up to 16-11 after another kill from Willits.
 
Unfortunately The Scarlet Raiders found their stride from there and went on an 7-0 run to take an 18-16 lead. The Highlanders stayed with Rutgers Newark from there and tied the game back up at 21-21.
 
The two teams traded points from there until the game was tied at 24-24. The Scarlet Raiders were able to win the final two points of the set after the tie and win the first set 26-24.
 
Rutgers Newark carried the momentum into the second set and came away with a 25-9 victory over the Highlanders.
 
Micah Godshall led the team in kills with 11, followed by Willits with six. David Dager and Juston Wolgemuth each had one service ace, while Tyler Schuhly had two total blocks. Matthew Gump finished with 22 assists.
 
Jack Fredericks led the Scarlet Raiders with 11 kills, followed by Corey Pieper with 10. Overall, the Scarlet Raiders hit for an attack percentage of .425 with 45 total kills.
 
The Highlanders came back from a 3-0 deficit starting the third set and took a 7-5 lead. Cairn continued to lead until Rutgers Newark used a 4-0 run to go ahead 17-14. The Scarlet Raiders continued the pressure from there and won the third set 25-18.
 
With the loss, Cairn dropped to 4-13 overall and 0-10 in the CVC. Rutgers Newark improved to 19-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference with the win. The Highlanders will turn around and play at Lancaster Bible College tomorrow, March 23, at 7 p.m.
