Swarthmore, PA – Cairn University lost a 6-3 game to Swarthmore College on Wednesday afternoon after a late comeback for the Highlanders fell short. The Highlanders dropped to 5-4 overall with the loss, while Swarthmore improved to 11-3.
Swarthmore opened up the scoring in the first inning by scoring on a sacrifice fly ball. In total, there were five runs scored for both teams combined on sacrifice flies in the game.
Caleb Lang led the game from the plate going 2-3 with a double and one run scored.
Brett Marks also hit a double in the game, while
Joey Nieves-Markee and
Caleb Moore each had a single.
Swarthmore added two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-0 lead in the game. Ryan Burnett tripled to right center to start out the fifth and then scored on a sacrifice fly. The Garnet later added their sixth run in the seventh inning.
Two Highlanders were hit by pitches in the seventh inning, the first of which allowed Lang to get on base in the lead off spot.
Trent Fiori then scored Lang on a sacrifice fly. Cairn's second run came from Moore's single to score
Joffrey Rosa.
Cairn's third run of the day came from
Alejandro Fernandez' bat on another sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the eighth. The Highlanders had a chance to put more runs on the board in the ninth with two runners on base but they were not able to bring them home.
The result is much improved over last season's 21-0 defeat to the Garnet. Cairn will return to the field this Friday with their home, and CSAC, opener against Immaculata University.
