Arlington, VA – Cairn University traveled to Marymount University on Saturday to play the hosts and Bluefield College in a tri-match, in which the Highlanders split results. The Highlanders started out by playing a tough five-set conference match with Marymount but ultimately fell 3-2.
Cairn then defeated Bluefield College in four sets to go 1-1 for the day and move to 3-6 overall. The Highlanders won with set scores of 25-11, 25-16, 15-25, and 25-11 against the Rams. The Highlanders hit 34 kills and 10 aces to defeat Bluefield in the non-conference match.
David Dager led the Highlanders with 12 kills and just three errors for a .529 attack percentage.
Micah Godshall led the team in aces with seven, while
Ryan Ludvik finished with 15 digs. Cairn hit nine kills in the first set with no attack errors and a .818 attack percentage.
Daniel Griffin led the Rams with seven kills and a .385 attack percentage, while Chase Craycraft led the team with five digs. Craycraft also finished with 19 assists to lead the team.
The Highlanders played their best CVC game of the season in their match against Marymount. Cairn lost the first set 25-16 but came back to win the second set 25-20. Cairn hit 12 kills with four errors to take the win in the second set and 13 kills with three errors in their fourth-set win of 25-23 against the Saints.
Marymount came away with 25-16 set wins in both the first set and third set. The Saints then hit eight kills in the final set to take a 15-10 win and a 3-2 win in the match. Overall, the Saints had a .294 attack percentage to the Highlanders' .214.
Andy Willits and
Micah Godshall both led the Highlanders with 13 kills in the match, followed by
David Dager with 11. TJ Wiechecki led the Saints with 15 kills.
Tyler Schuhly collected five total blocks for the Highlanders, while
Matthew Gump had 36 assists.
Ryan Ludvik led Cairn with 12 digs.
Erich Bratke led the Saints in assists with 28, while Albert Johansson finished with 10 digs for Marymount. The Saints improved to 3-2 in the conference with the win, while Cairn dropped to 0-4 in the CVC with the loss.
Cairn will next host Stevenson University on Friday, Feb. 19, for their second conference matchup of the season.
