Langhorne, PA – Cairn University won their second game in a row Wednesday night in a dramatic, overtime win against Marywood University 71-70. The Highlanders improved to 5-10 in the conference and 9-13 overall with the win.
The Pacers came back from a 10-point deficit in the second half to lead 65-62 with three minutes left to play in the game.
Josh Vlna then made two free throws to bring the Highlanders within one.
Julian Collazo put Cairn ahead 66-65 by grabbing an offensive rebound and putting in the layup.
On the final play of the second half, Marywood's leading scorer Connor Callejas was fouled with 15 seconds on the clock. Callejas made the first of two free throws and the Pacers got the offensive board; however the put back attempt did not go through.
Marywood appeared to have the initial upper hand in the overtime period after the Highlanders committed two straight offensive fouls on their possessions. The Pacers took the lead 70-66 on two layups by Callejas but the Highlanders were not out of the game.
With 58 seconds on the clock,
Zachary Jackson made his only shot of the game, a three-pointer from the left corner to bring the Highlanders to within one. The Pacers missed on their next possession and
Julian Collazo put Cairn up by one with a layup up and under.
The Pacers then took a timeout with the ball at mid-court and seven seconds on the clock. Cairn stuck to their men on defense and the shot put up by Connor Callejas bounced of the back of the rim and out as time expired.
Gerroid Doughty II led the scoring for the Highlanders with 20 points, followed by
Julian Collazo with 19. Doughty also finished with a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds. Collazo nearly achieved the mark with nine rebounds.
Kyle Bonner, like Jackson, hit big three-pointers from the left corner of the court. Bonner was 3-3 from the spot in the second half and finished with 11 points.
Cory Callejas led the Pacers in the game with 19 points, followed by Shane Letthand with 17 points. Overall the Pacers shot 39% from the floor and 26% from three-point range.
The Highlanders will try to ride the momentum of their last two wins as they travel to Centenary College this Saturday for their second meeting of the season.
