Elizabethtown, PA - With six seconds remaining in a two-point game, Elizabethtown's Connor Moffatt stepped to the line with a chance to tie the game. Moffatt missed his free throw but the rebound was knocked around and picked up by the Blue Jay's Michael Pastore. Pastore stepped up and banked in a three from the left side of the top of the key as the buzzer sounded to give Elizabethtown a 68-67 victory over the Cairn men's basketball team.
The Highlanders led for the vast majority of the game and four different Highlanders scored in double-digits.
Zachary Dolton and
Gerroid Doughty II led Cairn with 13 points each.
For a large portion of the contest, it didn't look like it was going to come down to the end. Cairn held control of a large majority of the game including most of the first-half.
The Highlanders started off the game with an early offensive spark from
Seil Park. The big man connected for the first two buckets of the contest. Park's layups began a 16-6 run for Cairn that lasted the first 6:19 of the contest. The run was capped off by a three from
JD Zamroz with 13:21 remaining in the half. Five different Highlanders scored during the run to help put the Highlanders up early.
The double-digit lead lasted for only a few moments as Josh Eden of Elizabethtown made a layup on the next possession to start the comeback for the Blue Jays. A jumper with exactly 10 minutes remaining in the half cut the Cairn lead to three at 18-15.
Gerroid Doughty II then drove on back-to-back possessions and drew fouls on both to have four opportunities from the charity stripe. Doughty connected on all four attempts to push the lead back to seven.
With the Highlanders still leading by seven, Elizabethtown went on a 7-0 in less than a minute to tie the game at 26-26 with less than five minutes remaining in the half.
After a timeout by Head Coach
Jason O'Connell, the Highlanders righted the ship before half, ending the period on a 12-6 run to take a 38-32 lead into the break. The lead could have been more at the break if it wasn't for 11 first-half turnovers from the Highlanders. Cairn shot an impressive 50.0% from the field (15-30) and 44.4% from beyond the arc (4-9) to try and make up for their double-digit turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
The second-half was much the same story only this time the margin of error was just a little tighter. Cairn held a lead for much of the second period but the lead was in the three to seven point range rather than closing in on double-digits.
With under five minutes the Highlanders led by as many as seven points, but struggles from the free throw line (5-9 in the final five minutes) and costly turnovers (five in the final four minutes) allowed the Blue Jays to get bak into the game and heave up a prayer at the buzzer. That prayer was answered with the help of some glass and the Highlanders fell 68-67 at the last possible moment.
In the final five minutes the Blue Jays buckled down defensively and held the Highlanders to just one field goal - a
JD Zamroz layup with 4:40 remaining.
The Blue Jays won the turnover battle on the evening 15-20 and made the most of their extra opportunities, scoring 21 points off turnovers while Cairn collected just 14.
With the win the Blue Jays remaing undefeated on their home court this season (3-0) and the loss drops the Highlanders to 2-4 on the young season and they will take an extended break before traveling to Lebanon Valley on Dec. 17, game time slated for 3:00 p.m.
