Highlanders Edged by Shoremen on Saturday Afternoon

Langhorne, PA - The Cairn Highlanders dropped a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon by a 72-68 final to the Shoremen of Washington College. Cairn was led by sophomore forward Brennan Addley, who put together a solid double-double on the afternoon with 16 rebounds and 14 points. Addley was one of four Highlanders in double-digits on the afternoon. Cairn was led by Zachary Dolton with 16 points. Dolton also grabbed seven rebounds in the game.

The loss drops the Highlanders to 1-1 on the young season. They next take the court on Tuesday when they hose the Rosemont Ravens for their first CSAC game of the season.

Saturday's tilt started with a very notable difference when it came to the pace of play as compared to the season opener on Thursday night. Through the first-half the two teams had combined for just 53 points with the Highlanders holding a slim 28-25 lead.

The Highlanders had built that lead that's to a quick 5-0 run late in the half. With the score even at 23-23, Jeremiah Harris made a lay-up and Zachary Dolton hit a three on the next possession to open up their largest lead of the half. A pair of late free throws pulled the Shoremen within two at the break.

After the break the pace of play picked up remarkably on both sides. The Highlanders held a lead for the first five minutes until James Drury buried a three to tie the game at 36-36.

The two sides then traded buckets for two possessions each until Seil Park made a lay-up off a feed from Julian Collazo. Park was fouled on the play but did not convert the three-point play. He redeemed himself just moments later when he connected for a pair of free throws with 12:29 remaining in regulation to give Cairn a 44-40 lead.

A three-point play by Gerroid Doughty and another lay-up by Park were sandwiched around a pair of free throws from Washington and gave the Highlanders a 5-points lead. With the Shoremen trailing 49-44, they went on a 10-0 run to take a five-point lead. During the run four different players scored with Josh Porteous leading the way with five points.

After Julian Collazo put through a lay-up to stop the run, the Highlanders rallied to come back and take the lead at 59-47 with 4:30 remaining in regulation. The advantage was short lived as a three-point play by the Shoreman followed on the ensuing possession.

The lead then flipped between the two sides for the next three minutes. Dolton hit a three to give the Highlanders a one-point advantage with 1:35 to play at 68-67. Cairn held that lead with under 30 seconds but Washington's Joey Shelton gave the Shoremen a 69-68 lead with a pair of makes from the free throw line.

Trailing by one, Cairn had plenty of opportunities to hit a game-winning bucket but three turnovers in the final 15 seconds cut off any hope of a comeback. The Shoremen made three free throws in the final five seconds to secure the 72-68 victory over the Highlanders.

As mentioned, the loss drops Cairn to 1-1 on the season and they will next take the floor on Tuesday night when they host the Rosemont Ravens in the first game of their CSAC schedule.
