Langhorne, PA - The Highlanders held a 93-84 lead with two minutes remaining in the first-overtime period. The Rosemont Ravens then rattled off nine-straight points to tie the game and force another overtime period. In the second overtime, the roles were reversed. Rosemont jumped out to a lead and held a five-point advantage two minutes into the period. The Highlanders clawed their way back, eventually tying the game at 102-102 with a three by
JD Zamroz with 18 seconds on the clock.
Â
Rosemont's Clayton Wolfe put a bucket through in the paint with four seconds remaining to give Rosemont a 104-102 lead. Cairn then went the length of the floor and
Brennan Addley drew contact at the rim on a layup attempt, but not foul was called and his attempt fell short as the buzzer sounded. The buzzer ended a classic battle after 50 minutes, that saw the Highlanders trail by as many as 15 in regulation and fight their way back to force overtime.
Â
The loss drops the Highlanders to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC. Cairn will take a week off for thanksgiving before taking the floor against Gwynedd Mercy on Nov. 30.
Â
Before the game could even get to overtime, the Highlanders had to dig themselves out of a 12-point half-time hole. The Ravens took a 42-30 lead into the break after the Highlanders shot just 36.4 percent from the field in the first-half (12-33) compared to a 50.0% mark for Rosemont (17-34).
Â
The half-time gap could have been worse if not for a three by
JD Zamroz on the Highlanders' final possession of the half. The Ravens led by as many as 15 points in the half thanks, in large-part, to a 14-2 run that spanned 4:27 late in the half.
Â
Half-time seemed to come at just the right time for the Highlanders. After the break, Cairn fought their way back. After the two teams traded buckets for the opening four minutes of the half,
Brennan Addley put through an and-one layup to get the Highlanders started on a quick 8-0 run. Addley then hit a three and Geroid Doughty II connected on a layup to narrow the gap to 50-48.
Â
After the run, the Highlanders hung around, keeping the game in the four- to six-point range until the 8:22 mark when
JD Zamroz made one of his three triples on the evening to close the gap to two. On the ensuing possession,
Zachary Dolton stole a pass and went in for a layup and finished with the left-hand to tie the game at 62-62. The bucket gave the Highlanders a share of the lead for the first time since the 13:08 mark of the first-half.
Â
Rosemont went on a 5-0 run of their own with Kyle Lafferty scoring all five points on the run. Dolton countered with five-straight of his own with a layup and a three in front of the Highlanders' bench.
Â
The Ravens took the lead right back and tried to finish off the game following Dolton's three. Rosemont held a lead of six-points on three different occasions in the final four minutes, but the Highlanders would not give in. Big buckets from a variety of Highlanders including
Brennan Addley,
Julian Collazo, and
Gerroid Doughty II kept Cairn in the game. With 20 seconds on the clock, Cairn held the ball trailing by three. The Highlanders drew up a play for Doughty, but his three from the top of the key missed but Collazo was there for the rebound. Collazo found Dolton on the wing and he knocked down the game-tying three with three seconds remaining.
Â
With the game tied at 84-84 the Ravens and Highlanders headed to overtime.
Â
As mentioned the Highlanders jumped out to a nine-point lead thanks to a layup by Doughty, a three by Addley, and four free throws from Zamroz. The comeback seemed to be wrapped up, but the Ravens had other ideas.
Â
Rosemont used a devastating full-court press to force four turnovers in the final two minutes of the overtime period. The Ravens used these turnovers to spark a 9-0 of their own to tie the game with 23 seconds remaining. The Highlanders had a chance to win the game but a three missed the mark and sent the contest into a second overtime.
Â
Rosemont continued their run from the first overtime into the second six of the first seven points to take a 99-94 lead. After a pair of free throws by
Julian Collazo closed the gap to one at 99-98, Rosemont's Jamier Hughes hit a huge three with 2:05 remaining in the period.
Â
The gap remained for four for the next minute until
Zachary Jackson hit a free throw with 58 seconds on the clock. The Highlanders then got a defensive stand when Rosemont missed a layup and Zamroz snagged the rebound. On the next possession, Zamroz hit a three to knot the game once again at 102-102.
Â
With four seconds Clayton Wolfe made a layup and
Brennan Addley could not answer as the buzzer sounded.
Â
Tonight's game is the first overtime game since Dec. 2, 2015 when the Highlanders defeated Rosemont 97-94 on the road.
Â
Five Highlanders scored at least 14 points in the game led by
Zachary Dolton's 25 points.
Julian Collazo scored 14 and grabbed 12 boards for his first double-double of the season.
Â
With 102 points tonight, the Highlanders went north of 100 points in a game for the first time since a 101-92 victory over Simpson University on March 5, 2005 – that game ended in regulation.
Â
With the loss, Cairn falls to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the CSAC. Cairn will next hit the hardwood on Wednesday, Nov. 30 when they host Gwynedd Mercy at 8:00 p.m.
