Langhorne, PA - In the 103rd minute on a increasingly slippery pitch, Keystone's Abreham Kittel sent through a golden goal to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Cairn men's soccer team 2-1 in double-overtime. Cairn drew first blood with a goal in the 50th minute off the foot of
Brendan Keller. Keystone found their equalizer in the 63rd minute to set up the overtime action.
The two teams played an extremely physical battle and while there were a total of 27 fouls and five yellow cards handed out there were many other left out on the field.
Through the first-half both teams had opportunities, but it was level pegging through 45 minutes as neither team could find the back of the net. Heading into halftime, Keystone held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots and shots on goals at 3-2.
After the break it appeared that the Highlanders made the better of the halftime adjustments. Cairn took four shots in the first five minutes of the second-half, connecting on the fourth of those attempts for the first mark on the scoreboard for either side.
Zack Nelson played a beautiful ball from the midfield stripe down the right-side for
Brendan Keller. Keller ran onto the pass and took a touch at the top of the 18 toward the middle of the box. He then fired a left-footed strike to the far post that bounced off the post and safely into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
The Giants trailed 1-0 for 13 minutes before finding their equalizer in the 63rd minute on a bit of fortune. As the Highlanders cleared a dangerous Keystone opportunity out of the box, it went right to a Giants' defender near midfield. He played a high-ball right back into the box, but it was misplayed by the Cairn keeper and found the foot of Ibrahim Tounkara and he poked it through to tie the match a 1-1.
Cairn had their chances to take the lead back, none better than when
Joey Weaver was taken-down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute. His attempt from the spot sailed high - Cairn's second missed penalty kick in as many attempts in the last eight days.
The missed penalty kick would come back to haunt them as a couple of shots late in regulation could not find the back of the net and the game headed to overtime tied at 1-1.
In the first overtime period Cairn had the better of the play with six shots in the 10 minute period. Cairn's two best chances came in the 97th and 99th minutes each resulting in shots but only one shot by
Connor Eby went on frame and the Highlanders could not connect in the golden goal situation.
Just 2:31 into the second overtime period the Giants struck for the second goal of the afternoon. Off a Keystone goal kick the ball was played to the midfield. After a quick pass back to the defensive line a long ball was sent ahead by the Giants to the left corner. Keystone's goal scorer from the 63rd minute, Tounkara, picked up the ball just two paces from the end-line. He went baseline and eluded his first defender before touching a pass to Abreham Kittel. Kittel took one touch and sent a shot from the left-corner of the six to the far post for the goal.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 0-3-0 in the CSAC and 4-8-1 overall.
Cairn will next take the field on Tuesday when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy to take on the Griffins at 6:00 p.m.
